Red River Gorge, KY

Red River Gorge is one of the most underestimated places! Only a two hour drive from Southern, Indiana, it is the perfect place to visit if you're looking for a relaxing and active vacation. We chose this location for our annual family trip this year - which included my almost three year old and my 8 week old nephew! My little family was so glad to get away with my brothers, SIL and parents for the week. Theo cooed over this little nephew, we got to hike some amazing trails, and enjoyed some incredible views just from out cabin. If you are looking for a simple place to visit, have active kids, or little ones to put in a carrier, I would highly recommend Red River Gorge!

Things to do:

Take the Sky Lift up to the Natural Walking Bridge

You can choose to walk up to the Natural Hiking Bridge, or opt to take the Sky Lift! The lift is $17 per an adult and it takes you all the way to the top. Perfect for those wanting to walk across the bridge, but may be worried about the actual climb up, because it can be brutal! It is a great option for families with older parents, or little ones who you know you may end up carrying the entire time.

Get a picture at Lover's Leap

There are so many hiking trails located around the Natural Hiking Bridge. These include Battleship Rock, Whittleton Arch Trail, Balanced Rock and Lover's Leap. You can spend the entire day exploring all these trails that truly show some of the most amazing views. After conquering the Natural Hiking Bridge, I definitely recommend making your way over to Lover's Leap and getting a picture on the edge of the mountain. Trust me, it's pretty cool!

Take a hike to see and swim in a waterfall

One of my favorite trails in the Red River Gorge area is Creation Falls. This trail is also known sometimes as Rock Bridge Arch. It is a much easier trail than the Natural Hiking Bridge - my two year old son was able to walk most of the path all by himself. My favorite part of this trail though is the waterfall. You can slide down it and swim around in the small creek. It was the perfect resting area in the middle of the hike and we all had so much fun playing in the water. If you have littles, this is definitely a must-do while in the area.

Kayak in an underground cave

If you are looking for something different to do, or a place to go to cool off from the heat - definitely check out kayaking at The Gorge Underground. Here you can paddle your way through an old mine, in total darkness (well they do give you helmets with lights). It is about a one hour tour and they also offer boat rides. You have to be at least 3 years old to participate in the boat ride and 5 for the kayaks.

Enjoy family time in your cabin

I think we had the most fun spending time together in the mountains and enjoying views from our cabin deck. I would highly recommend picking a place that has amazing views and some small hiking trails within walking distance. We are also a huge board game family and spent almost every evening playing cards together. Don't forget to bring items for a bonfire and smores! Always a favorite when staying in the mountains.

Eat at Miguel's pizza

I can't complete a blog without mentioning Miguel's Pizza. We actually ate here twice while we were in town. 🙈 They are easy to get to and located very close to the Natural Hiking Bridge. They have a basketball court, and other games you can play while waiting for your food, as well as dining areas indoor and outside. This is a great place to hang out, eat some delicious pizza and spend time with family and friends after a day of hiking.
